Mengenal ISO dalam dunia fotografi

Dalam fotografi tradisional atau film ISO atau ASA bisa diartikan sebagai seberapa sensitif-kah sebuah film terhadap cahaya. Parameter ISO diukur dengan menggunakan angka, mungkin Anda pernah melihat pada film tertera angka 100, 200, 400, 800, dan lain-lain. Semakin rendah angka atau jumlah ISO yang tertera berarti semakin rendah juga sensitifitas film dan lebih halus juga grain atau noise yang dihasilkan oleh film tersebut.

ISO 100 pada umumnya diterima sebagai ukuran ISO yang normal dan akan memberikan hasil yang memuaskan, sedikit noise atau grain. Kebanyakan orang lebih memilih untuk mengatur ISO pada kamera mereka dengan 'Auto Mode', dimana kamera akan menentukan pengaturan ISO yang tepat berdasarkan kondisi pada saat pemotretan (setting secara otomatis serendah yang kamera bisa) tetapi kebanyakan kamera juga memfasilitasi Anda untuk menentukan pengaturan ISO Anda sendiri.
Ketika Anda ingin memiliki kendali penuh terhadap kamera, dan lebih memilih pengaturan ISO secara manual, Anda akan menjumpai bahwa itu akan berpengaruh terhadap aperture serta shutter speed, dan pengaturan ketiga-nya harus diselaraskan untuk mendapatkan exposure yang tepat. Sebagai contoh, jika Anda berniat meninggikan ISO dari 100 ke 400 maka Anda akan mendapatkan shutter-speed yang lebih atau aperture yang lebih kecil.

Ketika memilih pengaturan ISO alangkah lebih baiknya menanyakan hal-hal dibawah ini pada diri Anda sendiri:
  1. Cahaya - Apakah subyek foto cukup cahaya?
  2. Grain - Apakah Anda memang menginginkan foto dengan sedikit grain atau foto rendah noise?
  3. Tripod - Apakah Anda sedang menggunakan tripod?
  4. Subyek gerak - Apakah subyek foto Anda bergerak atau diam?
Berikut ini adalah contoh situasi-situasi yang mungkin membutuhkan ISO tinggi :
  1. Even olah raga indoor - subyek foto bergerak cepat dan Anda memiliki cahaya yang kurang
  2. Konser musik - kurang cahaya dan sering kali tidak boleh menggunakan flash
  3. Galeri seni, gereja, dan lain lain - Kebanyakan galeri memiliki peraturan yang melarang penggunaan flash, dan ruangan indoor bisa dipastikan kurang cahaya.
  4. Pesta ulang tahun - Penggunaan flash ketika klien yang berulang tahun sedang meniup lilin pasti akan merusak suasana bukan?
